Training RISC-HUMAN in France

Introduction

Human risk assessment of contaminated sites may form a part of large projects where soil quality as well as economical and social interests are of importance. You can think of regenerating degraded and damaged land towards a site with no actual human risks due to soil contamination. Risk assessment can also be applied in smaller projects, i.e. determination of the effectiveness of a soil remediation. Decisions within these risk assessment projects are based on various data like concentrations of contaminants, soil parameter values or for instance building characteristics. Van Hall Larenstein developed the human exposure model RISC-HUMAN, which supports this decision making process. RISC-HUMAN (version 3.2) is suitable for carrying out a site-specific human risk assessment and is used in numerous countries around the world including France and Belgium. For (potential) RISC-HUMAN users who would like to improve their application of RISC-HUMAN and would like to learn more about modelling and uncertainties in risk assessment, we offer the course RISC-HUMAN. The course will be held in France.

Course

The course is intended for people with different levels of experience in using RISC-HUMAN. Knowledge about soil contamination issues is required. For those with no or minor experience, the goal of the course is to learn to apply RISC-HUMAN in daily practice. Participants with more experience will be able to apply RISC-HUMAN in more complex cases after following the course. The course will link as much as possible to the daily practise of the participants i.e. by an inventory of bottlenecks in using RISC-HUMAN prior to the start of the course. These bottlenecks will be discussed during the course.

Contents

•  Introduction RISC-HUMAN and outline of the possible applications of the model.

•  Lecture on modelling and model algorithms of RISC-HUMAN: participants will learn possibilities and restrictions of modelling a site with RISC-HUMAN.

•  Demonstration of RISC-HUMAN 3.2.

•  Exercises (small case studies): stepwise application of several features of RISC-HUMAN.

•  Discussion between users about bottlenecks and questions encountered in the application of RISC-HUMAN in daily practice. The trainers support these discussions.

•  Lecture on dealing with uncertainties in risk assessment in order to improve the interpretation of the model output and hence the decision making process around soil contamination issues.

•  Practical case study in which several model features will be considered and practical difficulties should be solved.

Practical information

The course is developed and presented by trainers of Van Hall Larenstein who are also involved by the development of RISC-HUMAN and training on risk assessment and soil contamination. The language of instruction during the training is English. Lunches are included.
