| Background information |
| On
the 29 th of October 1995 the soil remediation decree ('Decreet van 22 februari
betreffende de bodemsanering') came into operation in Flanders. This decree
is an important instrument in the way to deal with soil remediation of soil
and to prevent new contamination. It describes the need for carrying out
a descriptive research in which a risk assessment has to be carried out.
Based on the document 'Basisinformatie voor risico-evaluaties' (basis information
for risk evaluation) Van Hall Larenstein developed a user-friendly computer
program: Vlier-Humaan (Vlier = VLaams Instrument voor de Evaluatie van Risico's).
Vlier-Humaan is accepted by OVAM as a model for risk evaluation of soil
contamination. |
| Design of the software |
| The
program is designed according to the method of risk evaluation described
in the OVAM document mentioned above, based on ECETOC publications. Furthermore,
adaptations and modifications made by VITO are also included. For a contaminated
site it is necessary to choose one or more types of landuse. Depending on
site-specific circumstances assessment of risks requires modification of
relevant parameters in the model. Further, contaminations present at the
site can be selected and it is possible to enter the relevant concentrations
in soil, groundwater or contact media (like indoor air or vegetables). |
| Characteristics |
|
| Support |
The computer program provides users with a context sensitive HELP explaining the use of the program. Secondly, an extensive KNOWLEDGE, presenting all the background information, e.g. equations, default values and parameter ranges. The second is particularly of importance during the process of site-specific modelling.
